![]() This is something they can do today with Hangouts, but Google Fi is eliminating this functionality. To confirm: Fi subscribers who use an iPhone will no longer be able to send/receive SMS and voice calls from their phone number on a computer. NOT on their phone itself.Īgent: You wouldn't be able to use the messages for web interface on a computer as well. But it is unclear if Fi subscribers who happen to use an iPhone can use the Messages for Web interface on a computer like they do with Hangouts today. I understand that Messages for Web replicates this functionality for Google Fi to text/call from a computer, similarly to how you can with Hangouts today. It works for users who have an android phone or iPhone. Today, Hangouts can be used on a computer by any Fi user to send/receive SMS and make/receive calls to their phone number. Me: I am talking about the web functionality. I have received confirmation from Support that Fi subscribers who use an iPhone as their phone will not be able to do calling or texting from a computer any longer: Yes there is some sort of solution from Hangouts Web to Messages Web, we'll have to wait and see what works and what doesn't, what is supported and what isn't. Calling was seamless but several degrades have happened over time - although it is still workable with call forwarding to receive calls. Same with any other Android device with any other SIM. I use data SIMs on several Android devices and it's currently seamless with the primary device for text/MMS. There is no app, no solution, and this is that myself and several others are bringing up as a huge deal. Android app Secondary Devices: Here is where I believe we are screwed. For iOS, it's using iMessage (no cloud sync). For Android moving forward this will be replaced by Messages (with cloud sync). Receiving calls is currently broken on the Android app and has been for a while. Android app and iOS app Primary Device: SMS/MMS, Sending and receiving calls on Fi's primary device (the one with the Fi phone number). This is my #1 reason for using Fi, and yes, there is GV, and I very well may be going back to it after several years on Fi There are some things not said, which means it might not be as bad as it seems, or could be worse, we will have to see. Can't fall back on "customer service is outstanding" either like Ting can get away with. But the pricing is high, and is less and less attractive, with the more things they take away. If you use Fi as a Tmo MVNO then maybe you do not care. My remaining Fi credits conveniently run out about the end of the year, which lines up well for that move. Yes, I am making plans to move all my lines off Fi. Now the features are going away, looks to be even less than GV. I moved from GV to Fi because it was like GV with more features. For a PC sure, I use Hangouts Web all the time. Nobody is going to open a web browser to text, any more than they will go back to T9 texting. We will see how that works, but does not solve secondary Android devices. The fact that there is no iOS app solution leads me to that conclusion. I have a collection of several Android phones & devices, and I can bring any of them and have the same features with Hangouts. Going forward looks like there is no Fi solution, unless Message is going to become multi-device for Fi, in which case I will stand down. Why Google, why? Why end well-functioning core features without replacement for your paying subscribers? Sigh.įor the primary Android device, sure, there will be Messages with cloud sync. I'm very disapointed to see this - this change will likely push us off of Google Fi for good (as customers since launch). It sounds like that means texting and calling from the computer will no longer function for iPhone, and that there will be no way for iPhone users to continue hangouts messaging/calling/video calling (not SMS) with their hangouts contacts.Ĭomputer-based messaging was one of the most important features of Google Fi, if not the single most important. We’re here to help, so contact Fi support if you have any questions. Though we’re unable to move your Hangouts text messaging history over to your iOS messaging app, you can download a copy of it using Google Takeout. ![]() It looks like you’ve been using Google Hangouts as your primary texting app, so we wanted to let you know that Hangouts SMS and calling will no longer work with Fi as of January 19th, 2021.Īt that time, you’ll no longer be able to send or receive texts using Hangouts, and your phone will default to using the iOS messaging app.įor technical reasons, we’re not currently able to offer a Hangouts alternative that works for iOS users, and we regret any hardship this may cause. Move your conversations to your iOS messaging app We received this email today from Google Fi: ![]()
